A DAY OF HAIR, A DAY OF CARE
In 2022, more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered attempting suicide; more than 4 times that of their peers (The Trevor Project). The primary reasons for this terrifying statistic is the lack of social support and affirming spaces for these kids. As the laws meant to discriminate against trans kids continue to be considered by our leaders in Iowa and the nation, we felt called to action. We asked ourselves…what can we do?
We, as hairstylists and barbers, help people express themselves, gain confidence, and feel good. A new hair look is often a big part of the journey young people go through to express their identity. Hair is an expressive part of our bodies and at the very least, a way to speak without talking. The experience that our barbershops and salons offer can transform, validate, and uplift those who are experiencing the trauma of discrimination.
In recognition of Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31), we are asking salons to give free services to any trans and/or nonbinary students for our event April 7th and 8th. Appointments will be subject to each salon’s availability. We encourage the salon to extend hours if appointments are in high demand. Our goal is to get as many salons and barbershops to participate as possible to serve as many young people as we can.
